Position: Nuclear Safety Engineer
Location: Remote (with occasional site visits, primarily in Bristol, potentially Scotland)
Duration: 6 months (initially)
Start Date: 1 month from offer

I am seeking an experienced Safety Case Development Consultant to join my client on a 6-month contract basis. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the safety and compliance of our facilities in accordance with the highest standards set by the Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator (DNSR) and Her Majesty's Naval Base Clyde (HMNB(C)). This role is primarily remote, with occasional visits to customer sites as required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safety Case Development: Lead the development and maintenance of facility safety cases, ensuring alignment with HMNB(C) guidance documentation and DNSR requirements.
  • HAZID and Safety Assessments: Conduct Hazard Identification (HAZID) studies and safety assessments for shoreside facilities to identify potential hazards and ensure risk mitigation strategies are in place.
  • Infrastructure Basis of Design: Develop and review the Basis of Design documentation to ensure infrastructure projects comply with relevant safety and design standards.
  • REPPIR Assessment: Perform assessments in compliance with the Radiation (Emergency Preparedness and Public Information) Regulations (REPPIR) to ensure readiness for any potential radiological emergency.
  • Safety Management Plans: Develop and implement Safety and Environmental Management Plans (SEMP) and Safety Evaluation Compliance Reports (SECR) to ensure ongoing safety management throughout project lifecycles.
  • Safety Working Group Participation: Actively participate in Safety Working Groups, providing expert advice and guidance on safety case development and related matters.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Proven experience in safety case development, particularly in the defence or nuclear sectors.
  • Strong knowledge of HMNB(C) guidance documentation and DNSR requirements.
  • Experience with HAZID studies and safety assessments for infrastructure projects.
  • Familiarity with the development of Basis of Design documentation for infrastructure projects.
  • In-depth understanding of REPPIR and its application in safety assessments.
  • Experience in developing SEMP, SECR, and participating in Safety Working Groups.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present complex safety information clearly and concisely.
